About The Book
Ghostwood: Echoes of a Living Past is a heartfelt collection of poems and reflections by Billy Philips, moments of faith, love, loss, and redemption drawn from real life. Each piece was born from quiet walks, long drives, and prayers whispered in both joy and struggle.
Rooted in Texas spirit and Christian faith, the book invites readers to pause, reflect, and see how God’s presence runs through every season of life… the good, the hard, and the in-between. It’s a reminder that grace, memory, and meaning live in the everyday.
What is this book about?
I found my voice. Like a child learning to speak, I repeated my favorite words over and over. It wasn’t so much that I was proud of them as much as I liked the way they sounded as they flowed out of my mind on to paper. At first, I wrote about things familiar to me, experiences, insight on my faith, people, and realizations of my own roots. Later in this book, I began to notice some refinements and maturity as a writer like a child who begins to put together complete sentences using phrases and with a point. In the end, I was thinking less of what I wanted to write about and more about my readers’ interests. Remember, I am still growing and I will get better as I traverse the developmental phases that lead to the wisdom of a seasoned sonneteer maybe even a bard.
What is the purpose of this book?
People lose their voice in life. Everyone has something to say, commentary on situations in life, things that happen as we live, things about which we have various opinions of a topic. In my life experience, I found that my voice was silent but not missing. I always had to think before words came together on paper. Other time, expressing myself would have been dangerous especially when sensitivity was necessary because of the situation or the people involved. A few times, fear controlled my voice – fear of reliving pain or loss or doubt. Most often, doubt kept me silent – that voice in your mind that says, be careful words can hurt, they are sharp like a knife, and they have consequences beyond my intent. Indeed, words are powerful and lasting. The creation of this book gave voice to me and the reading of this book might give voice to you.
Reader Review
Ghostwood: Echoes of a Living Past, is a book of poetry. The work offers readers both the raw emotion of verse and the reflective insight of what prompted the author, Billy Philips, to pen each piece. Through its poems, the author reveals the intimate rhythms of the human experience—love, loss, memory, and renewal—while the accompanying commentary opens a window into the creative process behind each piece. This dual structure transforms the collection into both an artistic and intellectual journey, allowing readers to engage with the poet’s inspiration, the rationale for the symbolism, and the voice of expression. The commentary deepens understanding without diminishing mystery, bridging the personal and the universal, and inviting readers to see how meaning evolves between what is written, what is read, and what might be felt, and what is ultimately shared. Billy’s hope is to encourage others to find their voice in his work.
